David Baker began his career in furniture design and construction under the mentorship of his father, an architect, in a Kirkwood, Missouri garage. There, he began to develop his skills as an artist and carpenter, learning through trial and error that his most meaningful pieces resulted from his engagement with reclaimed materials. In 2007, David accepted a position with Stay Straight manufacturing, a Chicago-based high-end residential cabinetry and furniture shop started by artist Louis Brandt. Since his start with the company, he has developed personally as an artist and designer, creating pieces on a freelance basis, while simultaneously growing as an integral part of the small Stay Straight team.
David’s current work considers the way in which urban environments inform our experiences of hand-crafted furniture. Specifically, he wishes to integrate the modern influences of contemporary design while preserving the life of the natural sources from which his materials are derived.
